The 1904 double eagle gold coin has a motto on it which is not present on the very first double eagle gold coins. The motto was added to double eagle gold coin selections in the 1860s, so anything after the mid-60s will present a motto. The 1904 double eagle gold coin will also have the word “dollars” spelled out on the back of the coin, this change occurred in the late 1870s. Formerly, double eagle gold coins were being crafted with a single letter of “D” to indicate dollars on the back side.
